Tokyo Olympic Games stuck by bolts
2019-03-18

The Tokyo Olympics will be held next year, but Japan's preparations have been hindered by small bolts. According to the Daily Telegraph of the UK, the Olympic "building boom" has led to a shortage of bolts, resulting in delays in many projects such as venues, Olympic villages and hotels.

Bolt shortage has attracted many Japanese media attention before. Last month, the Nippon Economic News reported that the most shortage at present is the kind of connecting steel bar, which is used to build bolts for tall buildings or bridges, i.e. strong bolts. Strong bolts have been in short supply since last summer. It used to take only one and a half months to get them, but now it takes half a year to wait. If the shortage of strong bolts can not be relieved, the delay of construction, including Olympic facilities, will be inevitable.

Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun 8 cited data from the Department of Land and Transportation's autumn 2018 survey to confirm the above conclusion: 83% of construction companies have to delay the project because they buy uneven bolts. At present, the Kumamoto International Rugby Match, which was scheduled to be completed in February this year, has been shut down for a long time.

To solve this problem, the Japanese government has urged bolt manufacturers to step up production and work hard. Japanese Ministry of Commerce officials even suggested importing bolts from South Korea. However, the final conclusion is that even so, it is still difficult to meet the enormous demand during the preparatory period for the Olympic Games.
